Parking in a Pandemic
In the past few weeks our new normal has been to follow the method of social distancing. With social distancing, comes the distancing of people on public transportation. There are less people taking public transportation for fear of greater probability of contact with coronavirus, and more people are now driving in proportion to what used to be the normal. Many residents who once left their vehicles elsewhere, whether it be in another state, or housed their vehicles in a different town, are almost permanently parked closer to their homes now. ,Many who would commute (typically on public transportation) have taken over the very limited street parking there was to begin with. By bringing their cars into the city, to avoid public transportation and now letting the cars sit there, we are seeing widespread complaints of extremely limited parking spaces. If you look at social media sites such as nextdoor and facebook we are seeing lots of people complaining they don’t want to move their cars for fear of losing a space and not being able to find a new one for a very long time. No one wants to drive around in circles burning gas so there is simply a bunch of parked cars and that makes parking a nightmare. This trend is making people unhappy and seeking other creative parking solutions. Some people have moved their cars out of the city and simply waiting this problem out. Others actually left the city and ironically decided to leave their car behind on the street. This is particularly acute if it was a couple or family that had two cars, they left with one car and the other one is sitting on the street. Either way there is a lot of pain going on with parking lately.
Recently we are hearing of people purchasing vehicles to avoid public transportation. This is also create less street space in our communities. There are far less on street parking spaces in the city of Boston at this time, because most residents are working remotely from home and do not need to leave their homes, sometimes for days at a time. Thus, creating less spaces that can be used repetitively by multiple drivers throughout the day.
